Colorado's largest wilderness area, the Weminuche Wilderness, consists of over 433,745 acres of pristine wilderness.

Named for the Weminuche Indians, a small faction of the Southern Ute tribe, the wilderness contains over 500 miles of trails, with over 80 miles of
Continental Divide trails.

Three of Colorado's famed "14ers" can be found within the Weminuche Wilderness:

Sunlight Peak, elevation 14,059 ft.

Mount Windom, elevation 14,082 ft.

Mount Eolus, elevation 14,083 ft.

The average elevation throughout the area is 10, 500 ft., which makes the San Juan Mountains of the Weminuche Wilderness the highest mountain range in North America. Two major rivers, the San Juan and the Rio Grande, originate in the wilderness.
